How to Replace a Volvo Replacement Key Fob

Your Volvo key fob can do much more than unlock and lock your car. It's also a sophisticated anti-theft device that utilizes specialized technology to communicate with your car in order to prevent theft.

But what happens when your key fob battery dies? Volvo Cars Mission Viejo's team have all the answers.

How to unlock Your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer more convenience and functions compared to a traditional manual key. However, they do require batteries that eventually wear out and will need to be replaced. If your Volvo keyfob is working only intermittently, the battery may be dying and you will need to replace it soon.

Fortunately, there are easy steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery at your own expense. First, find a clean work area to carry out the process. Then, you can lay out all the tools you'll need. Find the battery hatch, and then open it with a flathead, a coin, or any other similar tool. Then, carefully pull out the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook of the key-ring. Wear rubber gloves to shield the clips and electronic contact surfaces.

Once the battery has been removed, place the new one in its socket. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it is seated in all the clips. Slide the cover toward the key-ring until it becomes loose and it falls off. Then, take off  replace volvo key G28  to reveal the mechanical key blade, which is hidden inside. You can use this to unlock your vehicle from the driver's side when you've lost or damaged the key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles are equipped with key fobs that do more than simply unlock and lock the doors. They also have other useful functions, such as summoning and auto parking the vehicle. In fact, the new Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine by using its key fob buttons. But how exactly does it work?

First, locate an area of clean work surface on which you can lay out all the required items for this project. Lay the fob on the surface, with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Utilize a flathead, coin, or similar tool to flip open the battery hatch. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces using your tools. This could cause the fob to cease working properly.

Once the hatch is open and the battery is in its socket and make sure it is correctly seated with the positive (+) side facing upwards. After the clips are secured into place, replace the battery cover and then reassemble the fob.

Pressing the unlock button once will disengage the alarm and unlock the driver door. By pressing it a second and then you can unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to roll down the windows during a hot day or to let in fresh air before climbing behind the wheel. If you'd like to go further then the keyfob may be used to activate the ERS that will begin the climate control system of the vehicle and allow it to warm or cool the vehicle to desired temperature levels when the vehicle is in a parking.

How to Replace the Battery

If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle the way it used to then it's time to change the battery. Changing the battery is fairly simple and requires just a small flathead screwdriver or plastic pry bar tool. Locate the small slot that used to house the backup/emergency ignition key made of steel. Use the blade of a screwdriver or a prybar tool into this slot and gently push the rear of the fob. Once the fob has been opened then locate the CR2032 3V battery and take it off. Replace the battery in its spot and snap the fob back together.

Note: Certain older Volvo models have a different type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have 7 tenths of one millimeter lower than a CR2032 So you'll need to be extra cautious when replacing your battery.

Your key fob has transponder chips that are programmed to your Volvo. If the codes don't coincide, your vehicle will not start. This is a vital anti-theft device that stops your Volvo car from starting if you select the wrong key.

You'll need to bring your lost key to a dealer in order to have it replaced. Your vehicle will also be reprogrammed. This process can take between 5 and 10 days and cost you a considerable amount of money. You can save money by programming your own computer.
